Our decarbonisation project

Low carbon aluminium

Decarbonisation is a major challenge for the protection of our planet and its inhabitants’ quality of life.

Developing industrial capacity and production methods in line with this challenge is essential. Our business is at the heart of this objective, because aluminium is a key energy transition resource.

Aluminium Dunkerque is one of the leading global low-carbon aluminium producers. The company has reduced its emissions by 17% (scope 1, 2) since 2013 and emits four times less greenhouse gases than the global average for the sector.

Thanks to these strengths, we intend to play a major role in European low-carbon aluminium production for the benefit of our customers and communities. Which is why we are accelerating our energy and environmental transition in line with the COP21 objectives by setting ourselves an ambitious roadmap to 2050: the lowCAL project.

An ambitious low carbon trajectory

The Dunkirk port area is an excellent decarbonisation laboratory in which Aluminium Dunkerque is a committed stakeholder as a founding member of the decarbonisation collective

Aluminium Dunkerque’s decarbonisation plan is in 3 phases:

Phase 1 – 2025
IMPROVE

The first phase in our roadmap consists in carrying on existing efforts to further optimise our operational excellence and energy performance by mobilising our teams, our customers, and our suppliers.
We are also significantly increasing our volume of products containing recycled aluminium.

At the end of this phase we expect to have reduced our emissions by 5%.

Phase 2 – 2030
ACCELERATE

This acceleration will include increased energy flexibility and a further significant increase in our recycling activity but also the adaptation of carbon capture technology to our industry.

In 2030, we are aiming for an additional 30% reduction in our emissions.

Phase 3 – 2050
ACCOMPLISH

This last phase mainly consists in implementing a new electrolysis series based on inert, non-carbon emitting anodes. This breakthrough technology is only just being developed. We will also see a further increase in our recycling activity.

Our emissions, all scopes included, will then have dropped by over 70%.

Fully aware of our responsibilities and faithful to our values, we are more than ever committed to fully playing our part in the collective drive to create a world that is more respectful of mankind and the environment.
